Evaluation 3- what have you learned from your audience feedback?

Below is a link to our online survey for our audience research so people can rate it and give us feedback on what they thought.

Below is a video focus group that we have recorded in order to gain some audience feedback. we have asked several people to talk about what they thought about our music video.

Evaluation on the feedback-
From the focus group we asked various questions that were related to all three products. We wanted to find out first how they felt when they heard the song. Majority of the people we asked said they felt emotion and sad because of the lyrics. From the answers I gathered that we were on the right track because we wanted to conduct our video in that way. People also discussed how they felt when they saw the video and said that it was heart wrenching because it was a said situation between the two characters.
We also asked if the music video complimented the song and most people said that if did because it was slow and clam.

One crucial question that we asked was about how well done we conduct the lip-synching and how much they would rate. The answers we got were fairly good as they said the lip-synching was accurate and almost seemed like the singer was singing it in real life. This was a very positive point and also they scored it around 7-9 on a scale of 1-10.

Another question we asked was what age group it would most relate to at the beginning of the task we got a idea that it would relate to mostly teenage girls tat were in a relationship. From the focus group I found that they would say it would appeal to them most. This is very positive feedback as we mainly aimed for the age group.

We asked the focus how much they would rate the video overall and the responses that we got were very high and on average it was an 8. Finally we asked them what they thought about all the texts as one. Majority of them said it was very nicely linked and use very good images for the digi-pak and the advert.

Overall I’m very happy with the feedback we got and I believe it has helped me to understand what level it is at.

Evaluation2- how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts (dvd digi-pak, magazine advert)?

As part of the coursework we were also assigned to create our very own ancillary texts like a magazine advert and a DVD digi-pak.  We had to do a lot of research for this because as a group this was a new aspect of media that we needed to learn more about. First we had to look at some professional magazine adverts and digi-pak to get a feel of what they look like and what they actually are. We did look at artist like Adele and Florence and the machines, which we could relate to.
Subsidiary texts-
We really wanted to create these subsidiary texts that could link with the music video and to link with each other. We decided to use some images from our music video so that it can compliment with each other.
Magazine advert-
Firstly we decided to do the magazine advert as soon as we finished our music video. Therefore each participant from the group took some time to research into the magazine advert industry. We all researched into similar artist to are song which was more indie and pop music. We looked at artists like Lily Allen and Florence and the Machines. When we finished researching we got together and discussed what we have found. We then sat down and designed some rough copies of magazine adverts. We then put these ideas up on the computer and used different software’s to create some sample magazine adverts. We then got a final picture, which is an image from the music video, and edited on picnic. Then I put the picture on PowerPoint and then put on different features like the iTunes label and HMV. I got these ideas by looking at previous work done by others, which looked impressive.

Digi pak-
Once we had created our magazine advert we swiftly moved on to the digi-pak. We also had to do some considerable amount of research into professional digi-pak’s because we didn’t know what they were. We researched into some similar artists like Florence and the Machine and Taylor Swift.

Throughout the digi-pak we have edited each individual image. We didn’t like the look of the original images so we needed to add more colour to draw people in. You can see that some of the images have a higher contrast because we wanted to emphasis the features on the picture like the ducks on the first image. We also changed the image of the sun so it comes out more and it noticeable. The leaves also show a more natural side and can link in with the whole song.

Final copies of the subsidiary texts-
Here is the digi-pak (above) and magazine advert (below) that we have created. I think that they both work well together and also with the video. They all use similar shade, tones and colour, which are really important when you try to work these together. It’s essential to have similar colours because it makes it more attractive and it makes them link really well and work together. It also shows some connection that they are of the same product.

We thought to use at least one significant image in all the products so that it looks more similar and flowed better. Therefore we used a significant image of the main character from the music video to be the front cover of the digi-pak and magazine advert. We also contemplated that the audience may become more attached with the whole product and give it some meaning.
Furthermore, the writing is the legal things that need to be on the digi-pak like the copyright sign and the production group. As for the song titles it’s in italics, which is seen as being sleek and posh. It’s also feminine and the song is very feminine, as we have gathered from our feedback.  For the magazine advert we have tried to us the same font as the digi-pak because it’s from the same product so we wanted to link it all together.
Also the music advert had been edited so that it’s more focused on the singer rather than other features. It’s set in a natural surrounding, which ties up with everything like the genre of the song. I believe that the song is more of a country pop song that is quite mellow and naturalistic. It reminds me of music which comes from Taylor Swift who is a country pop song. Her videos are quite clamming, naturalistic and soft. It has soft and smooth colours to incorporate the emotions and feelings. I think this is really effective because all the items have a key point that they can relate back to. In out video we have tried to use the similar colours because it creates something clam and it complements the song. The song it slow and smoothing so the video needs to be like that as well.

These are images from Taylor Swifts song called Love Story and you can see that it uses very natural and subtle colours to emphasis the song.
In our music video, digi-pak and magazine all use similar colours because it shows a good link between them all. Also its more appealing to the target audience as its all very feminine.

Below is a image of words which best describes all three products.

Focus Group-
Below is a video focus group that we have recorded in order to gain some audience feedback. We have asked several people to talk about what they thought about our music video and the subsidiary texts that go with it.

From the feed back i have gathered that most of the people that we asked about if  the digi-pak and the magazine advert went well with the music video said yes it. They said that we incorporated images from the music video to the magazine advert and the digi-pak which works well together. It also shows a clear link between all three products. Therefore in conclusion I can say that we have successfully produced subsidiary products to go alone with the music video.

Here are some words put together that were used when the individuals in the focus group talked about the products:

Evaluation 1- in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

Firstly I would say that our music video does use a considerable amount of conventions of the genre. Our music is more in the pop and indie genre so we had to first do a lot of research in to them genres.  By doing all the research we done it gave us a clear idea of what we had to include in our video. We wanted to add as many conventions of those genres so that our music gives the impression of being really fluent and professional.
We looked at artists like Adele, Taylor Sift and Florence and the Machines. They gave us some very good ideas about what we need to include in our magazine advert, digi-pak and most importantly our music video.
The way we used conventions of the pop and indie genre is by creating a smooth look and gives a cool, relaxing feeling. Nonetheless we wanted to create a real atmosphere where the audience really can relate to.

Instruments-
We also used very typical indie instruments for example a guitar. In many indie music there is an acoustic instrument playing and we have used this in our own music video.

We have tried to incorporate real music video features to our own because there are more professional and the producers essentially know better about music videos.
In particular we looked at Adele’s music video in great detail because we think it is very similar to what we want to create. There is one shot in our video which is very similar to a shot in Adele’s video.
However we have somewhat challenged the typical conventions of a music video because we have used two very different genres and tried to collaborate it together so it mixes well and sends out a totally different emotion to what the audience expect. You rarely find a genre that has two genres; so that there could be a variety of audience and appeal to a wider audience and to different genders essentially.

Other conventions that we used were lip syncing in the music to the video. We had to edit the lip syncing so it looks professional and accurate. We also had the singer play the guitar so it gave it a more country feel and emphasises the singer’s emotions.
Another convention is that we have a narrative were we have a story line. Our story line is a relationship between a male and female. It shows the stags of the relationship and what the singer is going through. We go from the beginning of a relation and throughout we show the relationship disappearing. Finally we also added a natural mise-en-scene. This is because the song is a country pop music and it has a natural feel to it. Therefore we had trees, birds and the natural surroundings.
Below you can see that I have attached some images from our music video and some still shots from Adele’s song ‘Some one like you’ to compare some of the similarities.

You can see by looking at the images that they are very similar. We made the image back and white because we wanted to demonstrate a different time period and we thought this was a clear way to show it.

We choose to look at her video because the lyrics are some what similar to our as it talks about relationships and break-ups. Therefore we thought that the video may be something that we are looking for. We looked at Adele’s video and picked out specific parts that’s may look good ion our own video. We used the idea of her eyes on a close up shot to really emphasis her sadness. That is exactly what we wanted to show so we used a shot of our characters eyes to really capture the emotions she’s going through. We tried to really incorporate it with our video because it is really shows of all the emotions and capture the audience’s attention to same detail.

Another way we added a type of genre is by using a very clam, relaxed and subtle colours for the mise-en-scene. We wanted to make it feminine so we decided to use softer colours which may appeal to ladies more. We also used the natural surroundings like going to the park and near the lakes.

Furthermore I would criticise our music video in way, which is that we didn't actually go against the convention of the girl and the boy breaking up. Its generally the female who is shown all heart broken and sad and this is what we showed. However could have challenged the convention and showsn the male being upset. Nonetheless I can back up this fault by saying that its a females vocal and it wouldnt really go if the male is shown in that light.
