At 89 its the Smashing Pumpkins with Tonight Tonight which was set in an old fashioned way. Number 88 was Elton John, who doesn't like being in his music videos, therefore for his song I want love he got Robert Downing Junior to act init. Another significant music video was by the Talking Heads in their 1981 song Once in a life time which was called a work of art. The video was exhibited in galleries and in the library of Congress in America; it was also shown in the Museum of Modern Art. At number 84 it was the hit by the Borntown Rats in 1979 called I don't like mondays, which took another direction to music videos. It was influences by Brenda Spencer the girl who didn't like Mondays so she went to a murderous spree. 83 was Shakespeare's Sisters with Stay which was set outside of the world with goodness and evil battling. At 82 was 50 cent with his song In Da Club which was his first song which introduced him. It was in a way which showed his that he was training to pursue his dreams. 79 was New Order with True Faith which was very surreal and had nothing got to do with the song. 78 was Godley and Creme with their song Cry which was played a significant role in the music video industry. they had got random people to sing parts of the song and just showed their faces with sad emotions. The faces where also emerged together which demonstrated modern technology. Finally for today it was 77 with MC Hammer with Cant touch this. It showed MC Hammer with a different twist to fashion. This video could be more related to fashion concerns.

For my research into the history of music videos i will be looking at Channel 4's 100 Greatest Music Videos. Today I looked at the bottom 10 videos and noted down the key features that they included. For my research I will have to include and identify they key conversions/characteristics of a music video.
The first music video I will be discussing is by Musical Youth which where one of the first all black band which portrayed coloured people as being talented and just like everyone else and they where actually the first coloured people to be shown on MTV. It was a new revelation for coloured people and this demonstrated that they are accepted in society through the love of good music. Another music video which has a major impact is by Bronski Beat called Small Town Boy which shows a homosexual man which gets attacked for being the way he is and all the things he has to face. Another important thing to note down was that it had no lip syncing which many videos don't do. Another interesting music video was by So Solid Crew which was conducted in an unusal way. each member of the band had 21 seconds to introduce themselves as it was their first single. However they where all cloloured which meant that they weren't going to have it easy as they got the bad press for being outragously bad. The 1967 We Love You by the Rolling Stones was produced in a documentary type which showed the lives of the group members. It showed them having drugs and showing the real artist an not something just for show. Herby Hancock's song Rokit ws one of the first songs which was played on the MTV channel by a black artist. This was a begining of something new for all coloured artist as things were looking up for them. Finally the last song that i looked at today was the Pet Shop Boys song Go West which took a new demension on music videos. It used a computer graphic style which was a more commercial art. Greenhalge which was the director of the video said that this allows directors a lot more freedom to experiment ideas.
Whilst we were browsing through the songs on unsigned.com we found various songs that we could potentially use for our music video. the first song was by Amanda Baker from Sydney, Australia. The style of music she works with is Blues/Soul/Folk. Below is a screen grab of her on the website:
Another Artist we found where we could use their music was a band called Thicke. they are a group of three young females. They are from Los Angeles, United States. here is a screen grab of them on unsigned.com:
This is a website where people can listen and use non-copyright music that have been put up by other artists. These artists may write their own songs and sing as well. This is a great website for us to use for our music video as we wont need to ask for permission when using the song. I have been listening to some of the music that is on the site which we can use for our music video. Below is a screen grab of the website which shows you the layout of it:
Here is a list of things that will be taken in consideration when conducting a music video: budget, casting, crew members- director, producers etc, length of song, mise-en-scene: make-up, costume, setting, dancers, the performer, what the video is about- whether its related to the song etc.
The main purpose of having a music video is to help promote the artist or band and their music. It also helps attract the attention of their fans and other people to help broaden them. Music videos also popularise the musicians so that everyone knows who they are listening to. Music videos tend to interact with the audience and illustrates the lyrics. It is also a marketing tool which raises awareness of the artists.
When would a video be judge as being successful? There are various ways of how a music video can be judged as successful for example if it gets good reviews in magazines, newspapers and online etc. Another way you can identify on how successful a music video is if a lot of people are talking about it in a positive way. It could also win awards like the MTV music video awards which suggest that it is successful. Also if it has a large number of views on Youtube which can also suggest that it is successful. Finally if the single has an increase in sales after the video is show it could show that it video is successful.
Michael Jackson's Thriller music video is another favorite video of mine. It is unusual for a music video as it is about thirteen minutes long. It had the largest budget at that particular time which made it even better. the music industry had not seen anything like this until Jackson's Thriller. I like this music video because its like a film and tells a story and the music goes along with the video.
This video is one of my favourite videos because its not just the ordinary video with the singer in it dancing around but has a point to show. It shows a story line of a family that is distraught by the fathers action. This shows domestic violence that occurs in many households and demonstrated that you don't need to stick up to it but do something about like call the police. The song is by the band called Chase and Status featuring Delilah. The genre of the music is dance which is very popular right now and most of the more popular songs out now are dance music. The key sound used on this track is heavy base to give it an up beat feeling and sound. In most of the dance songs heavy base are used. Nonetheless when it comes to the more important and serious part of the video the sound becomes more mellow and slow.
Hello my name is Naima and I will be demonstrating how me and my group are going to construct a music video. This music 'promo' video will be approximately five minutes long and will feature numerous characters and dances. As a group we will also have to create a 'digipak' that only includes the cover, so it can look as it was going to be released on a CD. Further more we will be producing a magazine advertisement for the 'digipak'. As we go through all these tasks I will be posting everything that we do and show the progress that is being made. Finally at the end of the music 'promo' video and the blog I will have to produce a critical evaluation.
